Have you ever tried going vegan? I had some friends visiting recently who were vegan so I participated in their eating habits. While I definitely agree with the sustainability benefits, I was shocked to form the opinion of it being relatively unhealthy.
By unhealthy I don't mean that the food that was being consumed wasn't good food - because most it was definitely delicious and fresh - but to me I believe being healthy is all about balance and moderation. With that mindset, I was taken aback by just how many carbs and starches I was consuming. Each meal contained a significant amount of carbs in order to ensure meal satisfaction. Of course, anything that wasn't a carb/starch was a vegetable. But think about it, you can't eat any meat or dairy products so what do you eat for breakfast? Most likely lots of bread. For lunch and dinner? Pasta or a vegetable dish (often containing, if not entirely made out of, potato or something similar) over rice or couscous or another carb.
Being someone who eats healthy in an unhealthy world, I'm sure being vegan can also be done in a healthier way. My experience, however, was one that showed how big of a role carbs play in the vegan world which in my opinion is definitely less healthy than consuming small portions of fish and the occasional meat along side a bunch of vegetables. While I don't always follow it, in my mind eating per the rough guidelines of the Palo Diet is the way to go-to. Hunters and gatherers ate in a way that was good to the environment eating only what was grown from the earth in its purest form and occasionally having meat/fish whenever it was hunted.
Anyone else try going vegan and have a different experience? The image featured was my favorite vegan dish. The recipe is African and can be round here.
