Finding out we're Pregnant

Knowing we were trying get pregnant and not having a local general family doctor, I decided making an appointment likely wouldn't be a bad idea. Also I thought, maybe since I'm there anyway they could give me a blood test to find out if we had successfully gotten pregnant. With the appointment scheduled for the day before leaving for one of my husbands big birthdays for which I had planned a surprise trip (the first half of which included friends joining and the second half being alone time for the two of us), I figured the timing was perfect. While the plan was perfect in my head, my doctor informed me that it's not standard anymore to do blood tests to check for pregnancy - also in the event that you were high risk etc and they would do one, they wouldn't do it before your missed period. Meaning, to my disappointment, I wouldn't be leaving the doctors office with news one way or the other. That said, my doctor did inform me that pregnancy tests were generally very accurate and able to detect pregnancy, and the first response was the best one out there.

After my doctor's appointment was over I of course went straight to the drug store and got some tests. Knowing that a negative could be false and it could just be too early since I still had a few days before my missed period, I braced myself already feeling the excitement and anticipation but knowing it would probably be negative. Once home, I went to the bathroom and started reading the instructions on the package. In short here are the steps:

  • Pee on the back of the absorbent end of the stick for no more than 5 seconds with the stick pointing down

  • Ideally take test in the morning when your pee is more concentrated

  • Once done, put the cover on and place that stick on its back for three minutes before reading what it says

When I went to read it I was shocked to see - I was pregnant! I couldn’t believe it but was super excited at the same time! It also meant, I would get to follow through with my birthday surprise for my husband. Earlier at the drug store, I had already bought him a birthday card in which I wrote him a birthday note and then signed it from the two (or what I assume is two) of us. I gave him his card at the end of dinner with one of our friends filming under the pretense that our parents wanted to see him read their cards. His reaction was absolutely priceless. Of course everyone was curious about what he was so excited about but we managed to keep it under wraps. Being able to rewatch that special moment in private later was something we both very much enjoyed and look forward to sharing with our kid if they are interested in the future.
